Dysphagia

Dysphagia is the medical term for swallowing difficulties. It can occur at any age, and its effects can vary from having problems swallowing certain foods or liquids all the way to not being able to swallow at all.

This training is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of dysphagia. It provides basic knowledge of this area, however if you are supporting individuals with dysphagia, you are likely to require additional training before carrying out tasks. We encourage you to discuss your specific training needs with your line manager.

Key outcomes:

  • Understand what Dysphagia is, the main types and the main causes of it.
  • Be able to explain the stages of swallowing.
  • Be able to identify ‘at risk’ individuals.
  • Know how Dysphagia is diagnosed.
  • Have a good understanding of how Dysphagia can be treated.
  • Understand the risks associated with Dysphagia.
  • Understand how to manage a Dysphagia diagnosis.
