At FuturU, we understand that caring for others comes with unique challenges – whether you’re working alone in someone’s home, supporting a family member with complex needs, or navigating difficult situations in your daily work. That’s why we’ve developed two comprehensive new courses designed to give you the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills you need to provide the best possible care while keeping yourself safe.
In this article, we’ll introduce our brand new Lone Working and Frailty courses, and explain how they’ve been designed to address real-world challenges with practical, actionable guidance you can use right away.
Lone Working
Are you a carer that works alone in someone’s house? Do you find yourself walking into unfamiliar environments wondering what you might encounter? FuturU’s new Lone Working course is designed specifically to help you feel safer and more confident in those situations.
Why this course matters right now
Belinda Southby, who developed our Lone Working course, puts it simply: this training has always been needed, but it’s become urgent. “There have been incidents and there are situations where carers and workers are concerned about going into certain environments,” she says. “Nobody should feel unprotected or unsupported or without options when going into their job.”
Think about it – paramedics usually work in pairs, hospital staff have colleagues just down the hall, but if you’re providing personal care in someone’s home, you’re often on your own for hours at a time. That’s exactly who this course is for.
What you’ll learn
The course isn’t just theory – it covers the practical stuff you need to know. You’ll learn what it really means to be a lone worker, how to assess risks before you even walk through the door, and what legal protections you have (plus what your employer should be providing you).
There’s also training on how to de-escalate situations, how to spot warning signs and triggers, and even simple things like making sure you know where the exits are so you don’t feel trapped in a room.
What makes this course different
What sets FuturU’s course apart from other training providers is its truly personalised approach. The course is guided by Ben, a carer who shares his real-world experiences and practical strategies. This personal touch is reinforced through targeted case studies that speak directly to the experiences of community carers.
The format is designed to keep you engaged too. You’ll get short videos introducing each section, interactive content, and case studies, without being overwhelmed by walls of text.
Once you’ve finished the course, it’s yours to keep. Need to refresh your memory on new legislation or review a particular skill? You can go back anytime and dip into whatever section you need.
The learning doesn’t stop there
This course is part of FuturU’s growing collection of soft skills and behavioural training – the kind of supportive, practical courses that help you handle the real challenges you face every day.
Alongside our new Lone Working course, we also recommend exploring:
Behaviours of Concern
This course provides you with the skills to manage crisis situations effectively and safely, teaching verbal de-escalation techniques and prevention strategies where restraint is inappropriate. You’ll learn to identify and understand different behaviours of concern, apply de-escalation techniques to manage challenging situations, work within legal and ethical guidelines, and provide appropriate support while knowing where to find additional help.
Conflict Resolution
Learn how to identify, prevent, de-escalate and manage conflict effectively, while building the confidence to navigate challenging situations and strengthen relationships. This course covers how to spot potential conflict situations early, use effective communication to address issues constructively, apply appropriate resolution strategies, manage your own emotional responses, and understand the legal framework around conflict and use of force.
Frailty
If you’ve ever wondered what frailty really means or how to better support someone experiencing it, FuturU’s new Frailty course is here to help. This isn’t just training for healthcare professionals – it’s designed for anyone who wants to understand frailty and make a real difference in someone’s life.
This is FuturU’s first course that focuses entirely on frailty, and it’s aligned to the Skills for Health Frailty Framework of Core Capabilities (Tier 1).
What you’ll learn
This course takes a comprehensive look at frailty, and by the end, you’ll be able to:
- Understand frailty itself: You’ll define frailty and understand that it’s not an inevitable part of aging, while learning to identify the common signs and explain how frailty can impact an individual’s daily life.
- Master person-centred approaches: You’ll learn to apply person-centred approaches in supporting those with frailty and adapt both verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to engage effectively with individuals living with frailty.
- Navigate support systems: The course teaches you to assess the role of families and carers in supporting individuals with frailty and how to access appropriate support services, plus how to collaborate with other professionals to provide integrated, holistic care.
- Implement practical strategies: You’ll be able to recommend strategies to reduce frailty risks, evaluate safe medication management practices, and apply ethical and legal principles in frailty care, including safeguarding responsibilities, decision-making rights, and future care planning.
What makes this course different
Here’s what really sets this course apart – it looks at the whole picture. You’ll learn to identify key signs of frailty and understand how it impacts not just physical health, but mental and social well-being too. The course covers the knock-on effects frailty can have on someone’s entire social life, because let’s face it – when your physical health changes, everything else can change with it.
