We’re excited to announce the launch of FuturU’s latest course, Stoma Care. This comprehensive online course is designed to equip health and social care professionals with the essential knowledge and skills needed to provide compassionate and effective care for individuals living with a stoma.

What is a Stoma?

A stoma is an artificial opening created in the abdomen, connected to either your digestive or urinary system, to allow waste to exit the body.

Why is Stoma Care important?

Living with a stoma can significantly impact a person’s quality of life. But with effective stoma care, you can:

  • Prevent complications
Proper care helps to reduce the risk of infections and skin irritation

  • Promote independence
Empowering individuals with a stoma to manage their own care can build confidence and independence

  • Ensure comfort and dignity
It’s important to understand the emotional and psychological aspects of living with a stoma to provide compassionate care.

FuturU’s person-centred approach

We believe that effective care goes beyond technical skills – it’s about understanding an individual’s needs, emotions and concerns, as well as the misconceptions and realities of living with a stoma.

That’s why our Stoma Care course takes a unique, person-centred approach, featuring real life stories from people actually living with a stoma, alongside the practical knowledge and skills needed for effective care.

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Get to grips with what a stoma is, why you might have one and how they work
  • Identify the risks associated with stomas and how to reduce them
  • Demonstrate the use of different stoma appliances and emptying and changing processes
  • Understand the realities of living with a stoma, as well as common misconceptions about them
  • Support individuals living with a stoma with their day-to-day care, ensuring their dignity.

The learning doesn’t stop there

Alongside our new Stoma Care course, we recommend the following three complementary courses:

Catheter Care

Learn about different types of catheters, insertion techniques, maintenance procedures, and potential complications. Our course emphasises comfort and dignity, covering topics such as hygiene, drainage bag management, and accurate record keeping.

Continence Care
