New course: LGBTQ+ Awareness in Care

As our society becomes more open and accepting, it’s easy to assume that the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community are a thing of the past.

But many older LGBTQ+ individuals have lived through decades of discrimination, legal barriers and social stigma. They may have been forced to hide their true identities, lost loved ones during the AIDs crisis, or experienced misgendering or misnaming within the care system.

This lived experience creates unique needs and vulnerabilities that care professionals must understand.

And that’s why we’re thrilled to announce the launch of our LGBTQ+ Awareness in Care course, which is now available in the FuturU library.

Our comprehensive and person-centred course equips you with the knowledge, skills and confidence to provide inclusive care to LGBTQ+ individuals, and the tools needed to support individuals who might want to explore or express their identities in later life, including those who may have never felt safe to do so before.

What you’ll learn in our LGBTQ+ Awareness in Care course

This 60-minute course covers:

  • Understanding LGBTQ+ experiences: Delve into the history and diverse experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals, with a particular focus on the unique challenges faced in later life.
  • Communication and terminology: Learn how to use respectful language, avoid assumptions, and build trust with LGBTQ+ individuals.
  • Legal and ethical frameworks: Gain a thorough understanding of the Equality Act, human rights principles, and ethical considerations in LGBTQ+ care.
  • Challenging discrimination: Develop strategies to identify and address discrimination, advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, and create a welcoming environment.
  • Intersectionality and specific needs: Explore the diverse identities within the LGBTQ+ community and address the specific needs of individuals with dementia, carers, and those who are trans or non-binary.
  • Safeguarding and support: Learn how to safeguard LGBTQ+ individuals from abuse and provide sensitive support around sexuality, intimacy, HIV, religion and spirituality.
