‘You’re not pushed for time – and it’s free’: Jane’s FuturU story

You can do courses at home around your other commitments, you haven’t got to go into a classroom, you’re not pushed for time, and it’s free. What more could you ask for? - Jane, self-employed carer

Meet Jane, a dedicated self-employed carer and FuturU learner based in Cornwall. Jane is passionate about making the people she cares for happy, and she’s using FuturU to help her do just that.

In this interview, Jane shares her career journey so far, the challenges she’s faced, and how FuturU’s flexible, at-home training has helped her stay up to date, and continue providing the best possible care.

Can you start by telling us how you got started in your career?

I started out caring for my Uncle while he lived at home with us, before establishing my own cleaning business. I’ve cared here and there around that for over 20 years. I’ve worked for a couple of companies over the years, but now I work on my own.

What do you find most rewarding about your care role?

Making people happy. The lady I care for at the moment, I used to just clean for her and she had other carers helping out. I’d go round, and she’d be crying because she didn’t click with them. But now, she’s a different person, really bubbly, and it makes my day.

Can you tell us about your experience with FuturU so far?

I’ve been learning with FuturU for around two years now. I was introduced to the platform by Mark, one of my cleaning clients (who happens to be FuturU’s very own Head of Learning Innovation!)

I used to be employed by a company, and did training with them in a classroom, but now that I work on my own I do all my training at home with FuturU!

How has FuturU helped you?

I’m Dyslexic, which can make it harder to remember information, and I struggle with some of the longer questions. It might take me a day or two to complete a course, which is why learning at my own pace online works best for me.

Learning in a classroom would totally throw me, and I honestly wouldn’t have the time – with FuturU, I can learn at home on my own terms.

It’s super flexible and easy to use – I can do my training on my iPad, and if I ever get stuck I know someone’s on hand to help.

Would you recommend FuturU to others?

Oh yes, and I have done already! I have friends who want to go self-employed like me, and I’ve explained that the best and easiest way to do all their essential training is with FuturU. And it’s free, which is absolutely marvellous.

You can do courses at home around your other commitments, you haven’t got to go into a classroom, you’re not pushed for time, and it’s free. What more could you ask for?

Jane’s story is a powerful reminder that learning doesn’t need to happen in a classroom to be meaningful.
